Altogether it can be taken to mean All Limbs or Whole Body Sarvanga Abhyanga is commonly referred to as just ‘Abhyanga’. It is a deeply relaxing full body hot or warm oil massage using an oil infused with herbs that has been carefully chosen to suit the individual's doshic imbalance. Abhyanga massage can be very beneficial in increasing lymph flow, stimulating the immune system and revitalising the entire body. Although regular self massage is an important part of the Ayurvedic dinacharya (daily routine), ideally for optimum health it is recommended that an individual receives an Abhyanga treatment from an Ayurvedic therapist every 6 weeks. To enhance the experience it is ideal to follow Sarvanga Abhyanga with a full body Marma Massage where various marma points on the front and back of the body are gently massaged releasing the prana or life force. This can be very helpful in shifting ama (toxins) from the body and the experience can induce a deep sense of calm and renewal. Indications Outside of the contra-indications listed below Sarvanga Abhyanga treatment is beneficial for everyone to improve general health and activate self healing. Contra-indications This treatment is not advised in cases of - • The presence of ama (toxins) except if followed by Marma Massage • Pregnancy • During period • After prolonged sun exposure • Fever, chest or sinus congestion • Headache, particularly of unknown cause • Open wounds or healing scars • Directly after heavy meal or if very hungry • Less than 8 weeks post surgery • After prolonged exposure
